In 2008 the automotive industry in China became the largest in the world in terms of units of automobiles produced. Accordingly, the semiannual Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, or Auto China for short, is one of the most important automotive exhibitions in the world. More than 2,100 exhibitors from 22 countries worldwide participated in the event from April 20 to April 29 and presented their compelling new models to the public.

Daimler and BYD, for instance, officially unveiled their electronic vehicle “Denza” at the event, a car that can travel up to 300 km (186 miles) on a single charge. Another car that attracted a lot of attention was the supercar “Koenigsegg Agera One:1” from the Swedish manufacturer Koenigsegg. Only five units of this car are planned for production and will only be sold on the Chinese market at a price of around 1.5 million USD each. Many Chinese car and truck manufacturers were also present at the exhibition. Catching up with large multinational OEMs is not easy as Chinese cars lagged behind for a long time, in particular in terms of quality and safety. However, in 2013 the “Qoros 3 Sedan” from the Chinese producer Qoros Auto was awarded by Euro NCAP as the safest small family car of 2013. It is not unlikely that the time will come when driving a Chinese car on European streets becomes ordinary.
