Identity Malta has recently launched the Key Employee Initiative (“KEI”) targeted to non-EU individuals seeking employment in Malta. This scheme was purposely set up in order to facilitate the issuing of work/residence permits for prospective employees. In fact, such permit under this scheme will be issued within five working days from the date of submission of the application.
The KEI scheme is applicable to non-EU individuals who will take up managerial or highly-technical posts in Malta. In addition, this initiative is also open to innovators involved in start-up projects which are endorsed by Malta Enterprise.
In order to apply for the scheme, the applicant must provide evidence of:
- An annual gross salary of at least EUR 30,000 per annum;
- Relevant qualifications, warrants or the necessary work experience;
- A declaration by the employer stating that the applicant has the necessary credentials to perform the duties being assigned.
What is the application procedure?
Applications for a single permit under the KEI scheme may be submitted while the applicant is physically in Malta or when still abroad. Thus, interested applicants need not travel to Malta to apply for this scheme.
Approved applicants will be issued with a residence permit valid for one year which may be renewed for a maximum period of three years, subject to the presentation of the documentation required by Identity Malta.
